In the Independent, Jamie Cragnoline tells the story of how she has had to rely on Maine Food Stamps to get her through each month. At first, she was embarrassed to use her EBT card because "welfare" (food stamps does not equal welfare) is a hotly debated issue in Maine.
She goes on to write about how grocers would look at her with pity in their eyes when she used food stamps to pay for her food. Cragnoline is an Americorp Vista, and she barely makes enough to live.
With 1 in 6 residents getting food stamps in Maine, I'd say that she has nothing to be embarrassed about, especially since she is working for peanuts for an organization that provides social services to so many needy U.S. citizens
