WHEELING - According to The Intelligencer / Wheeling News-Register, One in eight Upper Ohio Valley households has utilized food stamps since 2005.
Another sign of the horrible economic climate is that fact that more than 7,000 Ohioans now "cohabitate" when they normally would not have done so.
A report from the U.S. Census Bureau reflects that Upper Valley Ohio area is in the midst of both an economic and cultural shift. The data are based on a survey mailed to about 3 million addresses between Jan. 1, 2005, and Dec. 31, 2009.
Food Stamps
According to the survey, there are 138,295 total households in the Upper Ohio Valley. Of these, an average of about 12.57 percent, or 17,000, received food stamps in Ohio in the past five years. The food stamp program is now officially known as the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP Benefits)
