No Sodas with Food Stamps Plan Gets Cut

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg proposed a plan to disallow food stamp recipients to purchase sodas, and other sugary soft drinks (teas, sports drinks) with SNAP benefits.

Mayor Bloomberg believes that sugary drinks contribute to the growing issue of obesity in America. The United Stated Department of Agriculture (USDA) nixed the plan because, according to their research, the idea would be too big of an undertaking to tackle - well, Duh!

The lofty plan would have placed a food stamp ban on any sweetened drink that contained more than 10 calories per eight ounces. Mayor Bloomberg's initiative came out of his desire to help prevent, not only obesity, but also obesity-related disease such as diabetes.

I think his plan was a noble one, but it becomes a slippery slope when government begins to have that kind of control of the daily lives of the people (Big Brother & all that, you know?); what do you think?

2 Wisconsin Counties Report Food Stamp Usage Up By 50%

Both Marathon County and Lincoln County Wisconsin report that local households that receive food stamp have more than doubled since 2007. According to an article in the Wausau Daily Herald, the two small counties combined have more than 18,000 Wisconsin FoodShare recipients (the official name of the SNAP program in WI).

The huge increase provides a snapshot of how badly American citizens are faring in this horrible economic climate. Many of the residents are happy to be able to rely on the green Wisconsin Quest Card to help stretch their food budget each month.
