What is Considered a Household (for Food Stamps/SNAP Benefits)?

In terms of Food Stamps, a household is a group of people who live together, buy food, and prepare meals together, and whose members meet the eligibility requirements and are approved for food stamp benefits.

The amount of food stamp benefits you get will depend on the number of eligible people in your household and on how much monthly income is left after certain expenses (deductions) are subtracted.

States that Allow Online Food Stamp Applications

The Food Stamp Program (SNAP) has gone high-tech in many states. The Internet has allowed us to have the ability to do almost anything from home. In many states, the Internet will allow for people to apply for food stamps online.

The online food stamp application system has made it much easier for people to apply for food stamp benefits (SNAP benefits), partially because it has taken some of the embarrassing sting that some people feel when applying for public assistance, and because it has literally made it more convenient for some people with physical disabilities, and lack of adequate transportation to apply for SNAP benefits (food stamp benefits).

Here is a list of the current states which will allow for online food stamp application. More states will follow, and this list will be updated as the information becomes available:

California (1) - Delaware - Nebraska - Florida - New Jersey - West Virginia - Georgia - Massachusetts Virginia - Indiana (2) - Pennsylvania - Washington - Iowa - Rhode Island - Wisconsin - Kansas - Tennessee - Maryland - Texas (3)

Food Stamps (SNAP) - Federal or State?

The Food Stamp Program is administered through each state, however 100% of benefits and 50% of administrative costs are federally funded. Federal regulations which govern implementation of the program are developed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Food and Nutrition Services. So, in a word, Food Stamps (SNAP) are both Federally and State funded.

Go Vegetarian With Your Food Stamps

Did you know that you can enjoy healthy eating with your Food Stamps? Vegetarians generally have a healthier diet than those who eat meat.

If you would like to do something good for your body, why not try being a vegetarian? In addition to living a healthier lifestyle, vegetarians often spend less money on food; what better way to stretch your food stamp benefits than to cut down on expensive meats?

To start out, you might be interested in knowing which common foods can nutritionally replace meat.

1/4 cup of cooked dry beans
1 ounce of meat, poultry, or fish
1 egg
1 tablespoon of peanut butter
1/2 ounce of nuts of seeds

All of the foods listed will count as meat ounce equivalents, and they are all eligible to be purchased with food stamps. For more information on vegetarian living, click here.

Food Stamps for Home Delivered Groceries

Some stores have delivery capabilities. If those stores accept food stamps, you should be able to receive your food via delivery.

For example, food stamp clients in states where Schwan's food service operates can receive their food via delivery service.

The downside to this convenience is the fact that delivered food is typically more expensive than the foods you can get from the grocery store.

But, for food stamp clients who may be disabled and have a hard time getting to the grocery store, the convenience can far outweigh the higher price.

Paper Food Stamps Have Officially Expired

June 17, 2008 was the last date to use paper coupons (food stamps). After that date, you will have to use an EBT card to buy eligible food.

How to apply for Food Stamps in Florida

Times are hard, and almost everyone is struggling. There is help available if you live in the Sunshine State, and you cannot afford to feed your family. Fortunately, you can apply for Florida food stamps stamps entirely online. Follow these simple steps to apply for Florida food stamps.

Step One

The first thing you will need to do to is to glance over the rules of Florida food stamps to find out if you meet minimum eligibility guidelines. Even if you are unsure about your qualifications you should apply anyway. If you wish, you can use the online food stamp eligibility tool to see if you may qualify.

Step Two

Next, you will need to know that there is no longer a walk in office to apply for Florida food stamps. The Department of Children and Families have decided that it would be more time efficient to have all Florida food stamps applicants apply online.

Step Three

Once you complete the application you will be sent an email confirmation from the Department of Children and Families. Keep this confirmation until your application has been approved or denied – this is your proof that you have applied for Florida food stamps.

Step Four

If the Department of Children and Families deems you eligible for Florida food stamps, you may be able to get expedited food stamps within a couple of days. Otherwise, you will be notified of your status in less than thirty days.

Step Five

If you are eligible for Florida food stamps, you will get a letter in the mail. Your food stamps will be dispersed to you on a debit card which will be sent to you in a timely manner. That "debit" card is called an EBT card (electronic benefits transfer), and your Florida food stamps will be loaded onto the ebt card once a month. If you are denied, you will receive a letter that explains why you were not eligible, or you will get a request for more information.

Step Six

Feeding your family nutritious meals is much more important than pride. Keep your head held up high, and know that everyone needs help sometime.

Some Recipients Will Lose Food Stamps in Alabama (Mobile)

Here is a video report that outlines the fact that some people who are on unemployment are losing food stamps due to President Obama's Economic Stimulus Plan.

The Economic Stimulus Plan allows more money for unemployment, and this may cut some people out of the food stamp program; basically, it is a trade-off - Food Stamps for Cash. Watch the news report here:

About Me

My name is Rachelle Williams. One of my passions is linking low income and working class Americans to helpful social service agencies.

According to the United States Department of Agriculture, 12 percent of Americans -- 35 million people -- lacked the ability to put food on the table at least part of the year. They refused to refer to these people as being "hungry," but the situation is shameful to say the least.

Many Americans who are eligible for food stamps (SNAP) do not receive them, and when they inquire about them, clear instructions are not usually offered. I created this particular blog to bridge the gap between "government speak" and common sense straight talk.

Another one of my passions is writing. In addition to producing this blog, I am a web content producer (writing for Internet readers) and non-traditional college student. Producing web content is extremely easy, and I make enough money so that I do not have to work outside of the home. If you are interested in learning how to make money from home, visit eHow or Associated Content to sign up. Check out some of my content to see how easy it really is:
