Healthy Food Only With South Carolina Food Stamps?

South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, in a joint effort with the NC State Department of Social Services, is trying to push a measure that would limit the type of foods people can buy with South Carolina Food stamps.

Apparently, South Carolina leads the nation (with most other Southern on its tails) in having the largest amount of overweight people. The proposed measure would make it so South Carolina Food Stamps could only be utilized to purchased healthy food.

Governor Haley's intentions are to cut down the obesity rate in South Carolina. In theory, this is a good idea because we all know that obesity can lead to life threatening and expensive health problems such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke.

However, research projects that the measure would not do enough to solve the state's obesity problems because most people who use South Carolina Food Stamps only do so to supplement their monthly grocery budget.  The theory then being SC low income residents who rely on food stamps only part of the time will still spend money on fatty and sugary foods that leads to obesity.

I say, we have to at least start somewhere...   What do you say?
