California Food Stamps Gets a New Name: CalFresh

According to an article written by Alexandra Zavis at the Los Angeles Times, California Food Stamps have gotten a new name. CalFresh is the new name for the California Food Stamp Program. The goal of the name change is to encourage more California residents to apply for the program because of the nutritional value. The ultimate goal is to nudge families into living a healthier lifestyle by taking advantage of all the fresh foods available in their bountiful state.

First Lady Maria Schriver unveiled the new name and expressed her hopes that the program will help to abolish the negative social connotation that goes along with receiving food stamps. Along with the CalFresh name change, Shriver also unveiled a plan to offer free medical, financial and educational services to low income women - Bravo!
